Is It Possible To Eat Too Much Fruit?!?!

Summer is here and we love the idea of Fresh Fruit by the pool on a hot day. I know that is my family's favorite pool snack. Watermelon, grapes, pineapple, oranges, strawberries, and blueberries! You name it, we love it! SOOOO GOOD!

But, is it possible to eat too much?

YES it is.

I'm sure you've heard the phrase:
Too much of a good thing can be bad. Here is why. We can't forget that Fruit falls into the carbohydrates category. If you are someone who loves to eat rice, bread, spaghetti, potatoes, etc...adding fruit to your meal plan only adds on more carbs. Carbohydrates break down into sugar in the blood. So as fruit breaks down, your blood sugar level rises, signaling your insulin to release to regulate your blood sugar.

Where does it go? Some stays in the blood. Some gets stored in the muscles. But the rest of it gets stored as FAT, because it has no where else to go. The body does its best to send it to other useful parts of the body like our muscles. But our muscles can only hold so much. If there is no where else to store it for energy, it becomes FAT STORAGE! We don't want that!

So What Is A Good Amount?

Well it depends on how many other carbohydrates you eat throughout your day. If you don't eat breads and pastas, then you can get away with eating more fruit than others who love breads and pastas.

Using your hand as a portion guide is a good idea, because your hand is proportionate to your body, so you can ensure that your portion size fits YOU! One cupped handful of fruit is a good portion size for women and Two cupped handfuls is a good portion for men. Now, this can vary of course depending on your body type and fitness goals, but generally this is a good rule of thumb.

Eating Fruit with with a meal and for a snack is sufficient when incorporating vegetables and other carbohydrates into your day.

Enjoy those summer picnics and gatherings, but be aware of your carb portions.
