What is Good Nutrition?

What do you think good nutrition is? Think about it for a minute...

The answer may not be as easy as you may think. Nutrition isn't as black and white as we think it may be. Which is good for you, because that means there is no Best Diet Plan and you have a better chance of being able to incorporate good nutrition into your busy lifestyle and stick to it. Let me explain the importance of good nutrition.

First off, Good Nutrition controls our energy balance.
Without good energy balance, our body stops working correctly. Functions that aren't essential to survival begin to shut down. These include reproductive function, metabolic function, and brain function. One the other hand, too much energy coming into the body causes problems too. Resistance to necessary hormones can occur. Good Nutrition enables us to control our eating, so we can stay healthy while feeling great and maintaining an ideal body weight.

Good Nutrition provides nutrients to the body.
Since we have to control our food intake each day, it's important to make sure that the food we eat is loaded with nutrients. You want to make sure you choose high nutrient density foods. Stay away from foods with high calories and few nutrients. Nutrients are essential. Without them, there is risk of malnutrition, disease, and a lower quality of life.

Good Nutrition achieves health, body composition, and performance goals.
When you look and feel good, you are more likely to have more energy for your job, family, and life in general. Good nutrition helps you reach your goals in how you look, feel, and perform.

Good Nutrition is outcome-based.
No matter what approach you take with nutrition, outcomes happen. Those outcomes can be measured. Have the nutritional choices you've been making so far brought you closer to your goals? Or further away? It's a great mirror of reality.

Good Nutrition is sustainable for both us and the planet.
What's beneficial for the planet is often what's most beneficial for our bodies and health as well.

Good Nutrition is about removing limiting factors.
We all have things that stand between us and our goals. Genetics. You may think you're incapable of losing weight or getting fit, because of genetics. No matter our genetic makeup, we can all take steps in living a healthier lifestyle. I know you can still see improvements, no matter what. Exercise. Getting healthier requires both an active lifestyle and intentional exercise. We all start at different levels, but a combination of an active and nutritious lifestyle will help you get closer to your goals. Physiology. You may have hormonal issues, metabolic issues, and neurotransmitter issues...and these could make things difficult; however it isn't an excuse to avoid intentional exercise and nutrition. Work with your doctors and a personal trainer to help you find the right balance that fits in your life and your limitations. Mindset. I think negative thoughts stop most of us from pursuing a healthier lifestyle. "I never stick to any diet." "I don't have time." "I can't exercise anymore." "It's too late for me to start something like this." Well I'm here to tell you that it's never too late to start. Start telling yourself that you CAN! You are good enough. You are worth it! You deserve to give yourself a chance. You are Amazing! Our mindset plays a huge factor in our success, so start thinking some positive thoughts.

Nutrition is a huge limiting factor.
Food influences our mood, recovery, sleep, energy, and overall feelings of well-being. You may have a few glasses of wine that have you waking up tired. You may eat fast food that makes you feel bloated and tired for the rest of the day. Fuel your body with the right foods and you will see a huge difference in your mood and life in general.
